Our bias, stated
EMMPA works in Klaviyo only. We chose it in 2022 because it is where the Shopify data is richest and where our team’s ten years of knowledge compounds, and we migrate stores off Omnisend as part of our Setup. So read this as the view of a specialist, not a neutral reviewer. The useful part is that we say when Omnisend is the right answer, because taking those stores on would cost us money.
Where Omnisend wins
- Price. At the same list size Omnisend is typically 30% to 50% cheaper, and the gap grows past 50,000 profiles.
- Simplicity. A small team can run campaigns and the standard flows without training. The templates are good, the SMS and push channels are bundled, the automations cover the common cases.
- Stores under $1M with a simple catalogue. One product line, no sizes, no replenishment cycle, campaigns sent to the whole list anyway. Nothing in Klaviyo would change that store’s result; the money is better spent on photography.
If that is you, stay on Omnisend and come back when the business changes.
Where Klaviyo pays for itself
- The data model. Klaviyo stores every Shopify event with its full payload (product, variant, collection, price, properties) and every customer property, and lets you segment and trigger on any of it. “Viewed a size 9 boot in the last 7 days, has not bought, lives in the US” is a segment you build in a minute. For the flow logic in our fashion, resale and home decor guides, this is the difference between a template and a program.
- Predictive and RFM segmentation. Expected next order date, predicted lifetime value, churn risk, RFM groups, computed for you and usable in flows. Replenishment on the predicted date beats replenishment on a fixed delay.
- Flow builder and testing. Conditional splits on any property, A/B at any step, flow-level revenue per recipient. Our benchmark median of $1.07 per flow recipient and the $7.49 on the rug store come from flows that branch; a linear flow does not get there.
- Reporting that a founder reads. Attributed revenue by flow and campaign, revenue per recipient, benchmarks by industry inside the product, and an API that lets an agency build the monthly report you actually want.
- The ecosystem. Reviews, loyalty, subscriptions, helpdesk and CDP integrations are built against Klaviyo first. Over $2M, you will use three of them.
What the migration involves
Inside our Setup, an Omnisend to Klaviyo move takes 2 to 4 weeks:
- Export and import of profiles with consent status and properties; suppression lists carried over exactly.
- Historical engagement (opens and clicks) does not move; we rebuild engagement segments from Shopify order data and let Klaviyo’s own data fill in over the first 30 days.
- Flows rebuilt, not copied: a migration is the moment to replace the 5 one-email automations with the proper flow set.
- Template rebuilt in Klaviyo’s editor with the brand’s type and colour.
- Dedicated sending domain and authentication set up before the first send, with a 2-week warm-up schedule.
- Popups re-created and the old ones removed from the theme.
The cost sits inside the one-time Setup ($1,500); there is no separate migration fee. The risk is a dip in deliverability during warm-up; the schedule is designed to keep it small.
The decision in one table
| Question | Omnisend | Klaviyo |
|---|---|---|
| Store under $1M, simple catalogue, small team | Stay | Not worth it |
| $1M to $2M, growing catalogue, nobody reads reports yet | Stay for now | Plan the move when a marketer joins |
| Over $2M, sizes or brands or replenishment, someone owns email | Costs more than it saves | Move |
| Over $2M, planning loyalty, reviews or subscriptions integrations | Move | Move |
If you are over $2M and still on Omnisend
The free 30-minute audit reads your Omnisend account and your Shopify data and tells you whether the move would change the number, with an estimate of what email could bring in Klaviyo for a store like yours (our Klaviyo stores sit at a median 22% of revenue from email). If the answer is “stay”, we say so on the call.
